History of TK

Transitional kindergarten was created in 2010 as a three year program. However, here we are, years later, and it’s getting bigger and better every year. TK has proven it has a positive impact on the academic and social-emotional growth of all children who attend. Qualified and passionate TK teachers are constantly looking for developmentally appropriate practices and activities for our little learners. The main goal of many TK teachers is to create a love of learning for 3, 4, and 5 year olds. I hope you enjoy reading about my TK journey.

The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 was created by the California Department of Education as the first of a two-year kindergarten program.  The kindergarten entry date changed from December 2 to September 1. Therefore, students who turned 5 between September 1 and December 1 enrolled in a TK classroom so they would receive an additional year of school to prepare them for kindergarten. It became apparent that this program was successful and essential for kindergarten readiness so the state kept it. (It was supposed to be only a 3 year program and here we are, years later!)
